Biography

Command Performance band was founded in 1984 by Charles Mitchell and based in San Diego California. Beginning as a trio the band grew to ten members evolution to the final eight core members. Signed by San Diego World Class Records and produced by George Semper, the band was fully self contained with powerful live performances at numerous festivals and concerts opening for leading music artists including the Dazz Band, The Isley Band, The O’Jays, Confunkshun and Angela Bofill.

Command Performance recorded three records, one which was never released “A Command Performance” EP the perfected version of the original EP with added horns by Hollis Gentry and David Majal ii and mastered by Bernie Grundman! Considered “Holy Grails” of west coast boogie funk their released records include the 45 “I Still Love You” an unsung love song penned by Derwin Johnson featuring the powerful vocals of Tina Jackson. “Breakdance” is a west coast electro boogie Funk rare-vinyl with thumpin bass guitar by Vinson Grant and early vocoder by Semper. “Command Performance EP”, is a four song 34 minute JAM session and includes the funky “Let’s Dance” with Charles Mitchell vocals leading this floor stomper.

The George Semper music Archive has restored the master released and unreleased recordings, interviewed the artists, and bringing you the experience of the first issue of “A Command Performance” EP in 2019!
